In recent years, many governmental agencies and private companies came to a growing realization of the need for accurate forecasting freight volumes as part of the travel demand forecasting process. Freight demand forecasting is a complex process and has not been explored in the same degree as travel demand forecasting for passenger vehicles. 4 Rail Demand Forecasting Estimation 1 Introduction and Executive Summary Executive Summary Background and Aims This study is concerned with quantifying how variables outside of the control of the rail industry, commonly termed external factors, impact upon the demand for rail travel.         National Aggregate Travel Forecasting Models. The FHWA travel forecasting system includes separate models to forecast nationwide total vehicle-miles traveled by three separate vehicle classes: light-duty vehicles (automobiles plus light trucks used primarily as passenger vehicles), single-unit trucks, and combination trucks. Transportation forecasting is the attempt of estimating the number of vehicles or people that will use a specific transportation facility in the future. For instance, a forecast may estimate the number of vehicles on a planned road or bridge, the ridership on a railway line, the number of passengers visiting an airport, or the number of ships calling on a seaport.

Passenger travel demand forecasting, planning applications, and statewide multimodal planning. categories such as truck and non-home based travel. This distinction is inadequate to enable development of facilities and programs to benefit the commercial and freight transportation sectors. Although new models and forecasting capabilities are under development, the freight sector itself is poorly represented in the planning process.
